Durham County Council has to carry out repairs on the structure due to its age.

The bridge across the River Wear dates back to 1894 and is known locally as the "Blue Bridge".

The works were meant to begin in July last year, but it was delayed following an outcry from locals.

It was due to close for several months, and residents said this would cut off access to doctors and shops for too long.

It was going to be closed for 20 weeks but now the council said it will only be shut for three.

When will the bridge be closed?

The bridge will be closed for a number of weeks.

May 6-26: Full closure

May 27-early 2026: Temporary traffic lights

September 2025: Full closure for two weeks

October 2025: Full closure for two weeks

November 2025: Full closure for two weeks

A diversion route will be in place for vehicles but pedestrians can still walk over the Causeway Bridge.

The council said the rest of the project will be completed using temporary traffic lights instead.

But any vehicles wider than 3.25m will need to use a different route.

Although the bridge will only be closed for a few weeks, the full project won't be completed until 2026.

During this time, the bridge will have to be closed twice more.

The dates will be announced once they have been confirmed.

It comes after an announcement that the The Orwell Bridge, located on the A14 near Ipswich, in Suffolk will undergo repairs to replace two vital expansion joints.

Originally scheduled for 2025, National Highways has fast-tracked the work following concerns raised by MPs about the bridge's condition.

The repairs will now take place over seven weeks, starting in June 2025.
