Baloo's 'personal assistant'
Mandy Chapman stepped up to care for Hero Dog Baloo to give them both a "quiet retirement", although she jokes that as Baloo's handler she has become her "chauffeur and personal assistant".
The winner of the Hero Dog of the year category is given a cheque for £5,000 to donate to a charity of their choice, which, in Baloo's case, was the Essex Retired Police Dog Fund, which helps look after former service dogs.
What do we know about hero dog Baloo?
Mandy Chapman, who worked with dogs for 30 years in the Metropolitan Police, first met Baloo when volunteering in the Essex force after retiring in 2018.
"She's a phenomenal dog," Chapman said, "and she was great at catching baddies."
But later that year Baloo was run over by a suspect's car and one of her front legs had to be amputated.
"She was rushed to hospital and x-rayed, and they could see she had extensive injuries," Chapman said. "She was operated on immediately. They rebuilt her pelvis with metal bolts, and put metal rods down both back legs. For a month afterwards, she was in a cage, so her body could get used to the horrific injuries."
